How To Pray When You Are Under Spiritual Attack

If you have been looking for a biblical guide on praying when under spiritual attacks, read this article on how to pray when under spiritual attack.
Spiritual attacks happen to be part of the major challenges of being a Christian. Every genuine Christian is faced with diverse spiritual oppositions and confrontations on a daily basis. If you have been searching for a biblical guide and effective prayers to help you win your battles, then today's teaching on how to pray when under spiritual attack is for you.

How To Pray When Under Spiritual Attack

Firstly, I'll like to remind us that, there is nothing odd about a Christian going through series of spiritual attacks. I understand that the attacks we face daily can become very draining, but a Christian should live in anticipation of such at all times.

A Christian belongs to God's kingdom—which is the kingdom of Light. The kingdom of God and that of darkness have always been at loggerheads with each other right from time. A battle has always being waged in the unseen realm by these two kingdoms.

Ephesians 6:12 ESV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

The Bible tells us that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual entities and forces of evil. We have a common enemy, which is Satan the devil (Revelation 12:9).

When war first broke out in Heaven, the angels who rebelled against God were thrown out of Heaven—together with their leader—whom the Bible calls, “the ancient serpent or Satan the devil.”

The Bible further enlightens us that, the rebellious angels were not just thrown into outer space or a distant planet, but they were thrown down to the earth.

Revelation 12:12 NIV
Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.

Because Satan and his fallen angels were barnished from Heaven to the earth, they had a renewed hatred for the remnant of God who dwell in the earth realm. This marked the beginning of spiritual warfare against the people of God living in the world.

Revelation 12:17 ESV
Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.

We have the same enemy as God's. Every form of spiritual attack a Christian faces today, is a manifestation of the rage of Satan against God. Because he cannot attack God directly, the enemy transfers his aggression on God's people.

But rest assured, the battle is not ours but God's. Despite the efforts of the enemy against us, we have not been destroyed, because the Lord fights for us.

2 Chronicles 20:15 NLT
He said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.”

That said, understand that a Christian doesn't have to offend the enemy before he starts attacking them. Being on the side of God is enough reason for the enemy to constantly launch attacks against a Christian

I often hear some Christians question why the enemy is attacking them so furiously. The answer is simply because you are a Christian! The Bible tells us that, Believers across the world are going through the same experience (1 Peter 5:9). So don't take it personal.

This truth gives us the basis to establish the following facts:

  • Being a good Christian doesn't give anyone immunity against spiritual attacks.
  • Following God won't exempt you from spiritual attacks, but intensify them.
  • The moment a person gets saved, the enemy will start attacking and intensifying attacks against them. So if you just got saved and you've been wondering why you're getting so much spiritual attacks all of a sudden, this is the answer you've been searching for.
  • Beginning to experience intense spiritual attacks all of a sudden, doesn't always mean you've done something wrong. In most cases, it means you are on the right track with God, and the enemy is unhappy about it.
  • Living in obedience to God can help reduce spiritual attacks, but won't eliminate them.
  • A Christian who is doing great things for God on earth, gets attacked the most.
  • So long you're a genuine Christian, the enemy will attack you.

In case you are expecting the enemy to give up on attacking you some day, know that it is not going to happen any time soon. That is only going to happen when Satan and his cohorts are thrown into the lake of fire, at the final judgment.

As a matter of fact, if you even notice that the enemy suddenly stopped attacking you, and that has been going on for a long time, you need to re-check whether you are still living right. This is because the enemy would rarely attack someone who is already doing the things that please him.

We can only stay victorious in spiritual warfare, but no Christian outgrows spiritual attacks. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, God expects us to constantly resist the devil.

It is important to know and harness the full measure of the whole armour of God, so as to be equipped to resist the devil at all times.

How To Pray When You Are Under Spiritual Attack

Prayer is a powerful weapon, it can be used to achieve many things—including defeating the enemy in spiritual warfare. Go on and make the best use of this weapon to win your battles against the kingdom of darkness.

1. Start By Praising God

Praise God for the battles He had won for you in the past. Praise Him for the battles He's constantly winning for you. Praise Him because He is bigger and above the enemy and all his works against you. Praise God from a place of faith and assurance that He will win the present battle for you—like He always does.

Acts 16:25-26 ESV
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.

Praise on its own is a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. When we praise the Lord, things begin to happen in the unseen realm.

In the old testament, the people of God didn't only have the name of God as a spiritual weapon, they also had the weapon of praise. David is a good example of such people. He spent hours praising God, while God gave him victory over his enemies.

2. Confess Your Sins, If Necessary

If you are led to confess your sins before engaging in spiritual warfare against the kingdom of darkness, do just that.

If you know that there is any form of rebellion, a recently committed sin or any form of disobedience in your life, it is wise to confess them and receive God's forgiveness, before coming against the enemy in spiritual warfare.

2 Corinthians 6:17-18 ESV
Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”

Living in sin puts one in the grasp of the enemy. You don't expect to win your battle against a devil you are already pleasing with your deeds and lifestyle.

3. Speak The Word Of God In Prayer

The Bible makes us understand that the word of God is powerful, sharp and piercing like a two-edged sword. God's word is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17)—the most effective offensive weapon in the whole armor of God.

Jeremiah 23:29 ESV
Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Speaking the word or God while engaging the enemy in spiritual warfare, will go a long way to make your spiritual warfare prayers very effective.

Go ahead and use the word of God to your advantage! It is important to know spiritual warfare scriptures that can help make your prayers more effective.

4. Be Sure You're Amoured Up

Make sure you put on the whole armour of God before confronting the enemy. Study the scripture about the whole armour of God so that you will understand how to put each piece to use.

Ephesians 6:11 NLT
Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.

You can as well declare that you put on the full amour of God, and you are protected from all attacks of darkness, before engaging in spiritual warfare.

Having the full armour of God on before confronting the enemy, will go a long way to guarantee your safety and also your victory in spiritual warfare.

5. Get On The Offensive

If you sensed that you're under attack, or you woke up from a dream where the enemy was attacking you, such occasions do not require that you just say a prayer of protection and leave it at that.

You have to get on the offensive. Confront the enemy, command his deeds, spells, powers and manipulations against you to be broken by the power of God.

Jeremiah 1:10 BSB
See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and plant.

Always remember that, as a Christian, you have the upper hand when it comes to spiritual warfare. The violent obtains their victory in spiritual warfare by force!

Do not be afraid to confront the enemy head-on. The enemy would rarely retreat until he is hit by something stronger and more shocking than he could expect.

6. Thank God For His Victory

If you prayed with faith, you should already know that your prayers are working. Go ahead and thank God for the victory He has granted you during spiritual warfare prayers. Thank God, knowing that the battle is His and He has won it for you.

Final Thoughts On Praying When Under Spiritual Attack

When you are under attack from the enemy, do not focus on what the enemy is doing or how terrible the things he's doing against you are. You have to fix your gaze upon the Lord, no matter what the enemy is throwing at you.

Always remember that God is bigger, stronger and above all. It is not because of our numerous prayers that we are not destroyed, but because the Lord keeps us safe in the palm of His hands.

Don't be the Christian who gets so worried about the attacks the enemy, till they get distracted from their purpose. Sometimes, the enemy only wants to steal our attention from God to himself. Do not let him have his way.

When you have prayed and you know that you have prayed enough, you have to move on and focus on becoming all that the Lord destined you to be. Allow God handle the rest.
