As Christians, our communion with God should also involve communion with the Holy Spirit. So much is often taught and said in many Christian circles about developing and having a relationship with Jesus Christ. But I've noticed that not much is said about having the same with the Holy Spirit.
It is also possible to have an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit [we will discuss more on this in another article], and you can start doing so through a
daily prayer to the Holy Spirit.
The
Holy Spirit is the third person in the Godhead. He also the Comforter and Helper whom our Lord Jesus Christ promised to have the Father send to us.
John 14:16-17 ESV
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
After His ascension, the disciples of Jesus Christ would no longer see Him physically and talk with Him. But according to Jesus, 'they were not going to be left as orphans.' A successor was going to come; one who would take over and continue from where Jesus had stopped in His ministry to His people. More importantly, He was going to be with and in every genuine follower of Jesus Christ. He is the Holy Spirit.
Today, Spirit-filled Believers commune with the Father and with Jesus Christ through the
indwelling Holy Spirit.
Because we have the Holy Spirit, we have God living in us. We experience a more tangible and lively connection with God, and we have a better relationship with our Lord Jesus – all through the same Holy Spirit.
But have we ever thought of how we could draw closer to this Holy Spirit who lives in us; to know Him better, to have a better relationship with Him, or have Him work in us and through us to the fullest?
The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit is the One who knows the mind of God (1 Corinthians 2:11). The same Spirit helps us to pray according to the will of God.
If the Holy Spirit knows the mind of God and works to perfect our
prayers to God, then it is not erroneous to pray to Him. Since the same Spirit also functions as a bridge between us and God in the spirit realm, then it is not wrong to
pray to Him.
Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
The Holy Spirit didn't only come to live in us simply because He wanted to establish a connection between us and God. There are also other unique and crucial roles the Spirit of God has to play in the life of a Christian — one of them being their transformation (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Our Lord Jesus Christ gave us a sneak peek into some of the roles of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Believer, in the scripture below:
John 16:13 BSB
However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.
If you've been wondering if it is possible, acceptable or scriptural to pray to the Holy Spirit, I believe you have your answer now. Read further to see how and why we should
pray to the Holy Spirit.

Why We Should Pray To The Holy Spirit Daily
There are innumerable vital reasons why we should pray to the Holy Spirit daily. We will address 7 of them below:
1. To Stay In Constant Communication With God
As earlier stated, the Holy Spirit works as a bridge between us and God. He functions as a spiritual router bridging that communication gap between man and God. We talk (
pray) to God through the Holy Spirit, and God speaks back to us through the same Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit that we hear God's voice.
That said, imagine how improved that communication would become, if we prayed to the Holy Spirit daily. Imagine if we asked the Spirit daily to help us hear God better, and to help us stay in constant communication with God. Because such a request pleases God, the Holy Spirit would gladly help us in that aspect!
2. To Receive His Empowerment And Renewal
The interesting thing about being a Christian is that the Holy Spirit in us makes us exceptional. He does this by empowering us to transcend our mortal capabilities. He is the same Spirit who worked in
Daniel to enable him achieve excellence in his days and times.
One way the Holy Spirit empowers the Believer is by giving them supernatural wisdom from God. The Bible calls Him the Spirit of wisdom. He is also the Spirit who gives divine knowledge and understanding (Isaiah 11:2). These and more constitute empowerment from the Spirit.
Apparently, if we prayed to the Holy Spirit daily, He would empower us to achieve excellence wherever we find ourselves and in all that we do.
Psalm 51:10 ESV
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
The Holy Spirit also works to renew us inside-out. He renews our spirit and brings to life every dormant talent and virtue that would help us fulfil destiny.
3. To Be Guided In The Will Of God
Because God communicates with us through the Holy Spirit, it becomes really easy to know and walk in His will. Praying to the Holy Spirit will place the Believer firmly in God's will, since they are constantly updated on what God is doing and expects of them in each season.
Praying to the Holy Spirit will enable the Believer to receive God's guidance for their lives, so that they do nothing outside the will of God. As we daily commune with the Holy Spirit, we are guided from derailing (in our actions and decision-making) from God's will for us.
4. To Receive Grace To Stay On Course
The race is not to the swift (Ecclesiastes 9:11). Jesus said that the path of man's walk with God is narrow and difficult (Matthew 7:14).
It is definitely not by our own strength that we can stay on course and finish strong. It is only by the enablement of the Holy Spirit.
You will agree with me that almost every mundane thing on earth fights a Christian daily— to get them off God's path and possibly destroy them.
Hebrews 4:16 KJV
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
For this reason, we are instructed to visit the throne of grace (daily) for strengthening. But how can we do that without the Holy Spirit? Not by power nor might, but by the Spirit (Zechariah 4:6). It is through the Spirit of God that we access the throne of grace.
If we prayed to the Holy Spirit daily, we would receive grace, which would enable us remain steadfast, despite what the world and the enemy throws at us on daily basis.
5. To Subdue The Flesh
The flesh in this context, is the carnal nature of man. The Bible says that the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit of God (and directly contrary to the will of God).
If we allow the flesh to expand its influence in our lives, it will grow out of proportion to stifle our spiritual growth and all our spiritual attainments.
The right order is to work with the Holy Spirit to bring the flesh under subjection, so that we can do only that which the Spirit desires (and directly that which pleases God).
Praying to the Holy Spirit daily will aid His work of dominion over the flesh in our lives!
6. To Stay Full Of The Spirit
Being full of the Holy Spirit is equivalent to being full of God. And when we are full of God, we are full of His power. Every form of evil escapes our presence, because our presence has become the very presence of God!
We
overcome sin and temptation with ease, because we are full of the Holy Spirit. And this doesn't happen by neglecting the indwelling Holy Spirit, but through daily fellowship with Him!
7. To Stay Spiritual At All Times
It takes much effort to become a spiritual giant, but it may not take up to a day for a spiritual giant to be reduced to a carnal dwarf.
It is the Holy Spirit who makes a Christian spiritual. Without the empowerment and enabling of the Holy Spirit, no one is truly spiritual.
If we neglect our daily communion (or prayer) with the Holy Spirit, carnality will start kicking in – be it in our conversations or in our lifestyle.
These are just but a few reasons why we should pray to the Holy Spirit daily, and I believe you have seen how indispensable they are.
The Most Powerful Prayer To The Holy Spirit
I believe that the most powerful prayer to the Holy Spirit is a prayer of submission to Him. No one can tell how far the Holy Spirit can go or how much He is willing to go in transforming us. No one really knows how much the Spirit of God is capable of using them, if they don't submit to Him.
A prayer of submission to the Holy Spirit tells the Holy Spirit that we are ready to let go and let Him do with us whatever He wills. It is equivalent to asking God to take absolute control over our lives and birth His will through us. It is like laying down our very life to be changed and used of God. If that isn't powerful, then I don't know what else is.
So let's pray the most powerful prayer to the Holy Spirit as follows:
Dear Holy Spirit of God, I acknowledge that You were sent to complete the work of salvation which the Lord Jesus Christ started in my life. I acknowledge Your supremacy over my life. Today, I am willing to let go of my will and my desires that neither align with Your desires nor the will of the Almighty. I ask that You would take over and have absolute control over my life. Transform me and engulf me in Your Presence. Instruct and lead me in all that I do. Fill my vessel to the brim and use me as You please. Let my life be an epitome of Your glory and a visible manifestation of God on earth. This is ask in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Final Thoughts On Daily Prayer To The Holy Spirit
From what you've read so far, I believe you've seen that whether or not to pray to the Holy Spirit isn't supposed to be a question in the first place. Praying to the Holy Spirit is for the benefit of the Christian.
Fellowshiping daily with the Holy Spirit won't make God more spiritual, but will enable the Believer mount up on wings of the Spirit and swiftly ascend greater heights in God.
Every genuine Christian knows that they need the Spirit's help to live up to God's expectation of them, and to fulfil their God-given purpose. There is nothing wrong in seeking the Spirit's help to achieve these things.
Matthew 7:7 ESV
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Prayer is a free pass to possess all that God has in store for us. So beloved, go on and start praying to the Holy Spirit daily today.
God bless you.
