How To Overcome Sin Of Fornication

The Bible says it is possible to overcome sin of fornication. Let's learn how to overcome sin of fornication in this article.
How To Overcome Sin Of Fornication

Overcoming the sin of fornication is easier than many think. Join us today as we explore how to overcome sin of fornication from a Biblical perspective.

You will agree with me, that after getting saved, we do not instantly become perfect humans. Perfection is a continuous process which the Lord works out in us after our salvation.

We all come to God as sinners (Romans 3:23). And after our sins have been forgiven, we do not instantly start living and act like Christ. The Christ-kind of life takes time to form in us.

But as we make deliberate and continual efforts towards abiding in Christ and beholding His face, we are gradually changed into His image and likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Christians are God's project in progress. And for that reason, it is wrong to condemn ourselves or anyone else who is struggling with fornication. Instead of condemning, we must understand that we can overcome every sin through Jesus Christ. We must ensure we do our part towards overcoming them.

Can We Overcome Sin Of Fornication?

No sin is impossible to overcome (including fornication). And we cannot continue worshipping God and living an immoral life. We cannot continue this way into eternity—hoping for God's mercy. That is a risky path to take in our walk with God.

We must overcome and live above every sin, so that we can approach the Lord and stand before Him without any feeling of guilt.

Why We Must Overcome  Sin of Fornication

Fornication is (first and foremost), a sin against oneself. This implies that there are immediate consequences attached to fornication, that can affect those who practice it.

Romans 1:27 (KJV)
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Not all sins will wait until people to get in Hell before they can receive their recompense.

Some sins pose immediate consequences on people's lives and destinies. Fornication is one of them.

1 Corinthians 6:18 (KJV)
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

Many destinies are delayed, and some have been destroyed due to fornication. The only way to revive such is through genuine repentance and consecration.

How To Overcome Fornication

We must be willing to let go of all acts of fornication. Willingness is a driving force in itself. Where there is a will, there is always a way.

Again, how can we let go of the sin that we love so much? We must hate the sin that we want to overcome. This will further prove our willingness to be delivered from them.

1. Get Saved

The first and most important step to overcoming any sin is making sure we have genuine salvation. Being a member of a denomination and listening to sermons is not enough to enable us overcome any sin.

The power to overcome sin comes from Jesus Christ when He lives in us. This happens only through salvation.

Philippians 2:13 (KJV)
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

If you are yet to receive Jesus into your heart, make the decision now and pray this short prayer:

Lord Jesus I come to you today admitting that I am a sinner. I submit myself to You, asking that You come into my heart and take absolute control of my life. Wash and cleanse me from all my sins. Make me righteous and holy. Write my name in the book of life. Thank you Lord Jesus for I know that you have answered. Amen.

2. Get Baptised In And Stay Filled With the Spirit

Our Lord Jesus Christ lives in us through His Holy Spirit to empower and enable us live above sin.

Zechariah 4:6 (KJV) Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

One of the reasons why some listen to many sermons concerning addressing fornication but still find it difficult to overcome the particular one that is plaguing their life, is because they are yet to receive the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ is the One who baptises with the Holy Spirit. We must humbly ask Him, seeking to be baptised in the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 3:11 (KJV) I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.
Luke 11:13 (KJV) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Spiritual resistance against evil is one of the works of the Holy Spirit. When He lives in us, we can be sure that we will overcome every besetting sin, no matter how stubborn they may seem.

3. A One-time Infilling Is Not Enough

The fact that we were baptised in the Holy Spirit five years ago does not mean that we are still full of Him today. We must deliberately and repeatedly position ourselves to get filled with the Holy Spirit time and again.

4. Guard Your Thought Life

It is possible for one to stay out of sin for a month, only for a single sinful thought to pull them back into it the next month.

A good way to avoid going back to our vomit after we have been delivered from it is to guard our thought life.

Sometimes, suggestions to sin will spontaneously pop up in our mind. We don't even have to ask for them, they will always come. It is our responsibility to watch over our thoughts and discard sinful thoughts immediately they come up.

We must fill our minds with Godly thoughts especially by meditating on the Word of God.

When we have done this, sinful thoughts can be replaced with Godly ones which we found in scriptures! This is what the Bible meant by taking captive of thoughts:

2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

5. Abstain From All Appearance Of Evil

If we tempt the devil, he is always on standby to tempt back and get us into sin. We can not hope to prevent and overcome fornication while we still intentionally expose ourselves to things that could activate lust in us.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 KJV
Abstain from all appearance of evil.

If we must avoid fornication, we must be intentional about the things we feed our eyes.

Psalm 119:37 (NKJV) Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.

6. Yield To The Holy Spirit

The Lord is able to keep us holy, only if we are willing to be kept that way. God works on us to take away every besetting sin through the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Jude 1:24 (KJV) Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.

Our responsibility is to prove our willingness by being obedient to the leading and promptings of the Holy Spirit within!

If the Holy Spirit prompts us to not watch a particular movie, He knows that we would see a sinful scene in it. Hence, we should obey and avoid it.

We must submit to the continuous work of the Holy Spirit in us and cooperate with Him while He transforms us into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ.

7. Flee!

Simply Flee! In the face of temptation to fornication, we can not stand still and speak in tongues. Joseph proved to us that the best option in such a scenario is to simply flee!

1 Corinthians 6:18 (KJV) Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

8. Stay Prayerful

The need to stay prayerful if we must stay out of sin cannot be overemphasised.

Benefits of Overcoming Sin of Fornication

When we overcome fornication, the below benefits and more will always follow:

1. God's Blessings

Living the life that pleases God makes Him happy and He always rewards that with His blessings. The blessings of God are for those who obey Him.

Isaiah 1:19 (KJV) If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.

2. A Better Relationship With God

In their relationship with God, it is true that every Christian who lives a consecrated life has an edge over others who don't.

God is holy; He loves holiness. Purity grants us access into a deeper walk with Him.

2 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV) Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing ; and I will receive you.

3. Kingdom Productivity

Consecration is required to run an effective ministry. A ministry that impacts lives has purity as one of its foundations.

2 Timothy 2:21 KJV
If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

Final Thoughts On Overcoming Sin of Fornication

To sum up all that has been said in this article, it is needful to further stress that fornication can deny us Heaven if we pamper it. The scripture below proves so:

Galatians 5:19-21 (KJV) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these ; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [21] Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

A lot has been said already. These things are better experienced individually. If we can apply them to our lives, we will definitely see the expected results.

The article in itself is not exhaustive, but I trust the Lord to use it to help someone out there who will find it.
