How Can I Grow Spiritually? Here Is How To Grow Spiritually With God

It is the will of God that we grow spiritually. Here's a bible based teaching on how to grow spiritually.
How To Grow Spiritually

The question on how to grow spiritually happens to be one of the many questions on the mind of everyone who comes to Christ newly. If you've been searching for the right guide on how to grow spiritually, then read on.

Growing spiritually is the the will of God for every saved person on earth. It is also supposed to be the desire of every genuine Christian to grow spiritually.

2 Peter 3:18 KJV But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Christianity does not end at salvation. The grace of God did not save us just so we would go to sleep and wait for the Lord's return. It was for this very reason that the five foolish virgins missed the coming of the bridegroom.

Christianity is an interesting adventure. The walk with God is endless. After receiving Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we just started a journey; a spiritual journey with God. To get saved and do nothing else afterwards, thinking we have arrived is detrimental to our relationship with God

God desires to take a walk with us, and that is supposed to last throughout the days of our life on earth and extend into eternity with Him.

Genesis 5:24 KJV And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

How Do I Grow Spiritually

Spiritual Growth entails becoming more like Christ everyday. To grow in Grace means to grow into a place of oneness with Jesus Christ. There is no spiritual growth outside of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 4:15 KJV But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.

Knowing Jesus more and more happens automatically as we grow into a place of oneness with Him.

Relationship with Jesus Christ is the foundation for spiritual growth. The more we desire Him and work towards gaining more of Him, the more we grow spiritually.

How Do We Grow Spiritually

It is the will of God that we grow spiritually. He has also made provisions for our spiritual growth. We must as well make deliberate efforts to harness these provisions and grow in Him.

1. Desire The Milk Of The Word

After salvation, the best way to start this amazing journey with the Lord is to desire His Word. The holy scriptures is the major building block for the Christian spiritual growth.

1 Peter 2:2 KJV
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.

After salvation, it is not enough for us to become members of a particular denomination. We must as well intentionally study the Word under the supervision of the Holy Spirit. We must become students of the Word.

We must study scriptures to not just have head knowledge but to get God's Word in our spirit (which is as well necessary for our transformation).

No one automatically becomes like Christ after salvation. Sanctification has to take place and the Word plays a very vital role in making that happen.

Psalm 51:7 KJV
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

The Word of God (the holy scriptures) is God's cleansing agent which He uses to purge us from every blemish.

Ephesians 5:26 KJV
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.

The end point of this cleansing is character and behavioural transformation; into the likeness of Christ.

Desiring and studying the Word as new converts will enable us to understand the character of God and His dealings with people in time past.

It will also spare us the menace of getting tossed to and from by every wind of doctrine; and getting deceived or led astray by the wolves.

2. Abide In Christ

Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself instructed us to abide in Him. And the essence of this is also for our spiritual growth.

John 15:1-7 KJV
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. [2] Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. [3] Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. [4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. [6] If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. [7] If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

We can not grow spiritually if we grow apart from Christ.

3. Become A Doer Of The Word

We can not grow spiritually by just filling up our head with Bible verses. Spiritual growth comes when we apply the Word to our lives.

Christianity is very practical. It is not just about garnering knowledge. If we must grow spiritually we must put what we study in the Word into practice.

James 1:22 KJV
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

We know that Jesus Christ is a giver. So if we study about giving in scriptures but refuse to put it to practice, how then would we become like Jesus in that aspect? There's no way around.

We must dwell in the Word and act the Word until it is made flesh in us (John 1:14) and becomes part and parcel of our daily living.

4. Be Filled With The Holy Spirit

Without empowerment that comes from being filled with the Holy Spirit, we can not chase after God or walk with Him. The things of God are done only by the enabling power of the Holy Spirit in us.

Final Thoughts On How To Grow Spiritually

Growing spiritually is a process, and it's meant to be an enjoyable one. We must embrace the process. We have to get intentional about our spiritual growth. Make deliberate efforts to grow in Christ

We also should understand that growing in Christ is same as walking with God. A Christian never stops walking with God. So long we are alive, it is our responsibility to stay glued to God, through daily communion with God. By so doing and in turn, we will grow to become like Him.
