Powerful Prayer For Repentance

Here is a guide to praying for repentance and a powerful prayer for repentance. Learn to ask for forgiveness of sins through this article.

Powerful Prayer For Repentance

A good number of Christians are prayer warriors. We love prayers. Some of us can pray in tongues for hours. But there are times our prayers shouldn't be all about submitting to God a list of things we want Him to do for us—or rattling in tongues for ten hours. There are times we should humbly go on our knees to ask for God's forgiveness. There is power in prayer for repentance.

Some Christians believe that the only time people are to ask for forgiveness of their sins should be when they're getting saved—that moment when they decide to submit their lives to Jesus Christ. This school of thought holds that a Christian is eternally forgiven [once saved always saved]—irrespective of how they choose to live their life after salvation. They believe that it is needless to pray for forgiveness of sins over and over again.

While this ideology sounds easy and nice, it is totally erroneous; we cannot endorse it as the truth. The doctrine of eternal security, like a serpent, is a subtle but deadly one. If believed, imbibed and practised, it can amount to loss of salvation. We are admonished in the holy scriptures to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). The Bible also lets us know that only those who persevere to the end will be saved (Matthew 24:13).

Since true Christianity is a race (and no one has yet braced the tape), it is risky to live as though we've already arrived. Only when we have all reached the finish line should we say we are eternally secure.

But before then, diligence and wisdom is required on our part. No man on earth is infallible. The Church hasn't yet attained perfection. Prayer for repentance should become part and parcel of our daily prayer life. The need to constantly repent cannot be overemphasized.

2 Chronicles 7:14
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

In this article, we will touch on the following:

  • Repentance prayer points
  • Daily repentance prayer
  • Powerful repentance prayer
  • Prayer for god's forgiveness
  • Prayer of repentance for the Church

How do you repent daily? A true Christian understands that while they are on earth, they are not infallible. Even when one is not intentional about committing sin, there is always the possibility of unknowingly sinning against God. This calls for the need to repent daily. Prayer is one of the keys to living out the principle of daily repentance.

Steps To Repentance

Sometimes, a brief two-sentence prayer of repentance may just be enough to get one going in their relationship with the Lord. But there are other times when repentance needs to be diligently and thoroughly done.

Isaiah 59:1-2 ESV
Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.

Throughout scriptures, God has always forgiven those who sinned against Him; so long they humbly go to Him, seeking for forgiveness. That hasn't changed even today. No matter how far away we've strayed from God's ways, know that He is waiting with arms open wide, bidding us to return to Him.

Below are 5 steps of repentance every reader of our blog should know.

1. Show Remorse For Sin

It is one thing for one to know that they have sinned against God, and it is another for them to regret their actions. Repentance and forgiveness cannot take place if a person is proud of their sin.

2 Corinthians 7:10 BSB
Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

At the same time, forgiveness shouldn't be forced. We shouldn't do it simply because a preacher said we should, or for the fear of going to Hell. A desire to please God with our lives should be the driving force of our act of repentance. People should be willing to let go of their sin—for their love for God—and this should be manifest in how remorseful they are for disobeying God.

Showing genuine remorse for sin should precede the actual act of asking God to forgive us of our sin. If confession of sin is done out of fear and eye-service, then returning to one's vomit is inevitable.

2. Make The Decision To Forsake The Sin

Repentance is expected to be that one vital step towards completely letting go of sin. If we only repent with a backup plan of going back to the same sin, then our repentance wasn't genuine in the first place.

Hebrews 12:1 NIV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

I believe we should learn to treat every opportunity to repent as yet another chance given to us to get right with God and start living right.

We must understand that forgiveness of sin isn't a substitute for letting go of sin. The life of a Christian shouldn't revolve around sinning, asking for forgiveness and going back to sinning. God gives us many chances so that we can break free from this persistent sinning cycle.

3. Sin Should Be Confessed

Confession simply means admitting our wrongdoings. Go ahead and confess your sins to the Lord. Say them out and let God know that you are aware you've done wrong, you admit that you are guilty of your wrongdoings, you are sorry and you are willing to change for good.

Luke 5:32 NKJV
I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.

By so doing, you make yourself available to receive God's forgiveness. Understand that it was for sinners Jesus came to die—not the righteous. Do not condemn yourself, only let the Lord know that you need His cleansing blood to wash, cleanse and liberate you from your sins. You need His help to start living for Him.

4. Make Restitution Where Necessary

Restitution is one of the most ignored and neglected aspect of repentance, but it is one of the key steps towards complete repentance. To make restitution is to restore to the rightful owner, that which was initially taken from them or denied them.

For instance, it may not be enough for a thief to go to God confessing their sins. If they still have people's stolen properties in their possession, for repentance to be complete, they are expected restore those items to their rightful owners.

Mark 12:17 BSB
Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” And they marveled at Him.

In a scenario where we owe people apologies, we also ought to make efforts to apologise to them. This is an integral part of restitution—and God is pleased whenever He sees it being done from a sincere heart.

5. Forgive Others

Forgiving others is another powerful step towards receiving forgiveness from God. Holding grudges against people makes the heart impure. And we know that only the pure in heart can access more in God (Psalm 24:4).

Matthew 6:12 NIV
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

The Bible gives us this rule of thumb; that it is advisable before we present ourselves to God, we rather first of all, make peace with our offenders and people we've offended.

Understand that not everyone will reach out to apologize for offending us, but if we are in the right position to do it, then we should do.

Matthew 5:24-25 NLT
Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

Even when we are not at fault, if we are led to tender an apology (instead of expecting it from the offender), then we should obey God. Understand that forgiveness favours the individual who forgives more. It is not always for the sake of other people that we should forgive, but for the sake of our relationship with God. We want to be blameless before God.

We should not expect God to be merciful and forgive us when we cannot forgive those who have offended us. For repentance to be complete, grudges must be released and the heart must be free from impurities.

Prayer For Repentance And Cleansing

  1. Thank You Lord Jesus for Your sacrifice on the Cross for me. Because You gave Your life for me, I shall not be consumed by my sins. Through You I have hope of redemption. Amen.
  2. Father, I have come to realize that I have been living in rebellion towards you. I am aware of my wrongs and I have made this decision to turn away from them. Father, I ask that You forgive and accept me back as the father welcomed back his prodigal son, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
  3. Father, I present myself to You today, asking for the forgiveness of my sins. Lord Jesus, have mercy upon me, purge and wash me clean with your blood.
  4. Lord, I had gone astray and derailed from the narrow path. I admit that sin and the world has nothing to offer me except death. Now I return to You. Cleanse, purge and make me blameless before you. From now on, I choose to live a life that pleases You, so help me do just that, in Jesus Name.
  5. Thank You Lord for your mercy. Thank you for Your blood which you shed for the remission of my sins. Thank you for yet another chance you have given me to right my wrongs. I will no longer take your mercy for granted.
  6. Lord, release your powerful cleansing blood into my very being. Purge me of every form of impurity and everything that is not of you in my life.
  7. Lord, I ask that You purge and renew my mind with Your cleansing blood, so that I will be able to set my mind only on things above, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
  8. Lord Jesus, You are coming for a Church without spot or blemish. Enable me to live a blameless life from now on till you come again, in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Short Prayer Of Repentance

Father, I humbly come before You today. I acknowledge that I have strayed from your path. I have been disobedient. But from now on, I am willing to turn from my ungodly ways and live to please You. I am willing to obey your instructions. Therefore, I ask for the forgiveness of my sins. Let Your redemption blood speak on my behalf. Purge, wash and make me clean from my sins. I am ready to turn a new leaf. Make me a new creature. Write my name in the book of life and enable me live above sin from now on, in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Prayer For Repentance And Restoration

Restoration after repentance is often necessary, because our sins must have caused us loss of things God had blessed us with. The holy scriptures teaches us that “anyone who is born of God does not continue in sin...and the enemy does not touch him” (1 John 5:18). What this literally means is that, if we continue in sin, we open the door for the enemy to touch us and the things we have. When that happens, praying for repentance and restoration becomes necessary.

  1. Father, I ask that You forgive me of my sins. I ask for the restoration of all that the enemy gained access to steal from me due to my sins, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
  2. Father, You said in Your word that you will restore to us the years that the cankerworm and caterpillar had eaten. Let this come to pass in my life, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
  3. Lord, I have made the decision to walk in complete obedience with You. Just as You promised in Your Word that you will rebuke the devourer for my sake, let this be my portion, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
  4. Father, Your word says that you restored to Job all that he lost and You gave him twice as much as he had before. Let this be my portion, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
