How To Hear God's Voice

There's been a high demand for teaching on how to hear God's voice. Join us today as we find out from scriptures on how to hear the voice of God.
How To Hear God's Voice

Many have been requesting I post a teaching on hearing the voice of God. So join us today as we divide scriptures in order to discover how to hear God's voice.

The essence of salvation is reconciliation to God, and relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ.

There is more to Christianity than being members of denominations. Christianity is about relationship with Jesus Christ. And there is no functional relationship without effective communication.

God has always longed to have the closest walk with man as possible. Man was created to live in total unison with His Creator—via relationship. Such relationship cannot be established without communication.

We repeatedly see in the book of Genesis that God spoke with Adam. After the fall, we are told that Adam and Eve heard God's voice in the garden (in the cool of eveining) and hid themselves (Genesis 3:8).

When God pronounced the punishment for their Sin, they heard it out clearly. They were not guessing on whether that was God speaking to them or not.

This tells us that, communicating with God was a normalcy for Adam and Eve. This is the same level of alignment with God that our Lord Jesus Christ came to restore to man.

How Do We Hear The Voice of God?

It should be the desire of every genuine Christian to hear God's voice (personally) for themselves.

Hebrews 1:1-2 KJV
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

In the old Testament times, after the fall of man, God spoke through Prophets. Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, David, Jeremiah and etc, are some of those through whom God delivered messages to His people. But this changed after the coming of Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately, many Believers are still stuck with the wrong mindset that God continues speaking today, but only through prophets. This has led to the mad-rush after every self-acclaimed prophet, and so much deception that is happening in the Church today.

The sacrifice of our Lord on the Cross of Calvary tore the veil that separated us from the Father, and paved the way for individual access to the things of God (including hearing God for ourselves).

Does Everyone Hear The Voice of God?

Every genuine Christian can hear God's voice. Our Lord Jesus said so:

John 10:27 KJV
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

In Hebrews 1, we are told that God now speaks to us through His Son (Jesus Christ).

Hebrews 1:1-2 KJV
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

I understand that this scripture tends to confuse a good number of Christians, especially those who have been taught that God speaks to us through the still small voice of the Holy Spirit

Let's take a look at this:

The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of the Lord (i.e the Spirit of Jesus Christ).

2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
Romans 8:9 KJV
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

There is no contradiction here. The Holy Spirit does not speak for Himself. He works in tandem with the Father and the Son. Whatever the Father says to Jesus Christ, He relays it back to us through the Holy Spirit.

John 16:13-14 KJV
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. [14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

So yes, Hebrews 1 is right on spot and there is no contradiction. The Father speaks to us through the Son.

How To Hear God's Voice Clearly

God is always speaking, but not everyone can hear Him. It takes aligning oneself with God in order to be able to hear His voice and hear Him with clarity.

There are steps towards aligning oneself with God. We want to hear God, so we have to diligently follow each of these steps.

1. Get Saved

Before anyone can hear God's voice, they have to be truly saved. They must receive Jesus Christ into their life as their personal Lord and Saviour. Only the children of God can hear God voice. Salvation brings us into the family of God. Those who desire to hear God's voice should already be saved and following God. This is fundamental.

If you are yet to receive Jesus, pray this short prayer with me:

Lord Jesus I come to You today, as a sinner in need of a Saviour. I ask that you forgive me all my sins. Purge me clean with Your blood which was shed on the cross for me. Come in and take Your rightful place in my heart. Write my name in the book of life. Enable me to hear Your voice. Thank You Lord Jesus for saving me. Amen.

2. Be A Student Of The Word

One of the primary means through which God speaks to us is His Word. We cannot neglect God's Word and hope to hear His voice.

The Lord wants to speak to us as we sit at His feet and spend quality time with Him in His Word

Knowing scriptures will also enable us understand the Character of God and His dealings with man. With a good knowledge of scriptures, we're in a good place to hear God's voice.

When people don't know scriptures, they find it difficult to discern or differentiate God's voice from that of the enemy.

John 10:5 KJV
And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

3. Don't Be A Devotion-less Christian

Spend quality time with God. Each day, set aside a special time for God in your private space (for prayers, worship and studies).

If you don't spend time with your friend, would they have the opportunity to talk to you? The answer is definitely no.

If we must hear God voice, we must cultivate the habit of spending quality time with Him.

4. Live A Life Of Purity

When God is pleased with the way we live, He'll be willing to speak to us. The Holy Spirit through whom God speaks to us dwells in us. We are His temple. The temple of God must be kept pure and holy. Carnality clouds out God's voice.

5. Be A Doer Of The Word

Be quicker to obey God's word than disobey it. God's voice will often include instructions, hence, it is not for the rebellious. If we cannot obey simple instructions from the Bible, then is it when God speaks them to us directly that we will obey?

If we don't obey "Pray without ceasing" from the Bible, is it when the Holy Spirit reminds us to pray that we will obey?

We must be doers of the Word, then God will be pleased to speak to us.

6. Be A Lover Of God

There are many people who don't love God. The Bible makes known to us, a group of people known as 'haters of God'.

Romans 1:30 KJV
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents.

Anyone who wants to hear God's voice shouldn't fall within category. The 'Don't Tell Me What To Do!' and 'Don't Judge Me' group of people fall within this category.

The Holy Spirit will always tell you what to do and what not to do. Anyone who doesn't like that shouldn't hope to hear God voice.

7. Be Baptised In and Filled With The Holy Spirit

Getting baptised in the Holy Spirit is a prerequisite for hearing God's voice. The medium through which Heavenly communications reach to us is the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit in us connects us to Heaven and allows the flow of spiritual communications from Heaven to us, and vice versa.

The Old Testament prophets were able to prophesy only when the Holy Spirit came upon them. As at then, the Holy Spirit would come upon a man for a specific assignment, and depart when that assignment had been completed. But today, we have the Spirit of God permanently indwelling us. We are in a better position to hear God's voice.

The Prophets of old could not speak for God when the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon them. They would have to wait for that to happen, so they could hear God and prophesy to the people. That shows us that without the Holy Spirit we can not hear God.

After receiving Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, the next thing we should ask of Him should be the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:13 KJV
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Jesus is the One who baptises with the Holy Spirit and He can do that anywhere (even in your home), so long your request and desire is genuine. You have to ask Him and ask till you receive.

Luke 3:16 KJV
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.

Different Ways God Speaks To Us

What are the ways through which God speaks to us? One thing I want us to understand is that God desires to speak to us more than we desire to hear from Him. Again, we only have to align ourselves with Him in order to hear His voice.

God desires to talk to us every single day. God is still speaking and He does that through different ways. The scripture below lists to us, diverse ways through which God speaks to His people:

Joel 2:28-29 KJV
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: [29] And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

[Joel 2:28 further confirms that we can hear God only after we have His Holy Spirit living in us.]

God speaks to us through (but not limited to) the following means:

  • Dreams and Visions
  • Prophecy
  • Still small voice
  • Trance
  • The Word (The Bible)
  • Circumstances
  • Creation., Etc.

We may discuss each one of them, one after the other in subsequent articles. You don't want to miss any update. So make sure you download our Android app below or click on the bell icon beside the dark-switch above, in order to receive notifications for new articles.
