But One Thing Is Needful (Luke 10:38-42)

What is the one thing that is needful? While Jesus was with Mary and Martha, He left us a vital lesson for our walk with Him today.
But One Thing Is Needful (Luke 10:38-42)

Scripture

Luke 10:38-42 NIV
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed--or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

One Thing Is Needful

Every incident that took place in the Bible was carefully orchestrated by Heaven and documented for our learning.

In the above passage, we find two categories of Christians which are present in the Church today:

  • The Marthas
  • The Marys

The Marthas love serving. They are very active in diverse departments of different denominations. They do the ushering work, the singing, playing of instruments; the sweeping and mopping of the church building. They render service to God cheerfully with a smile on their face. Yet, in most cases, they rarely spend quality time with God in their private space. Their personal relationship with God is crying for help.

While the Marys are rarely available for none of the above. But their focus is on spending quality time with God in their private space. They are caught up in building an intimate relationship with Jesus. In this age, the Marys are few.

The Lord never said that Martha did wrong by running around, trying to prepare a meal for Him and the disciples. He simply pointed out which was more important (and preferable)—spending time with Him

Being out and about the Father's business is good, but spending quality time with the Lord is better.

One deadly weapon the enemy is presently using against the end time Christian is ACTIVITY.

Christianity isn't all about running around, attending conferences here and there, attending church services and serving God. Christianity is all about Jesus. Jesus is the beginning and end of Christianity.

Sometimes, it gets as bad as people losing their ability to hear God's voice, while in active service to God. Because they're too busy. They don't even have time to do their laundry, talkless of spending it with God.

You Are Distracted By So Many Things

The enemy wants a situation whereby a Christian can be so occupied with activities, to the extent they have none or less time for God.

At this point, they must have lost their sharp cutting edge. Prayer has probably turned out to be boring. The enemy is in a good place to launch successful attacks without hindrance.

If Christians are so busy chasing after every other thing apart from God, the devil is happy. Many have grown old just by being occupied with the cares of this world. They lost focus and were unable to attain maturity in Christ while they had the energy. They couldn't attain the stature required to be mightily used of God on Earth. That is exactly what the enemy wishes for.

We must understand that, ACTIVITY isn't a prove of a VIBRANT Christian. Christianity isn't about running around and fighting for positions in church. It's about prioritising and focusing on the most important thing.

If Jesus were to choose between serving Him and spending time with Him, He would gladly cross out serving Him

It is also possible to serve God the wrong way, if we neglect our fellowship with Him. Besides, serving God is supposed to be based on instructions. But if we don't have time for Him, how can we hear from Him, what He wants us to do next? We shouldn't serve God from the flesh.

Make sure that you have a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. Because if you don't, when the enemy strikes, activities won't help you.

Mary Has Chosen The Better Part

Mary is wiser than Martha. She went for the better part. The Marys understand how to balance activities with spending quality time with God. They will not give greater time to the less important thing.

Prayer

Thank you Lord Jesus for revealing to me in Your Word today, the thing which is most important in my walk with You. Teach me to manage my time effectively, and to prioritise spending quality time with you daily. Amen.

God bless you!
